1. Clean the bike
Even if it looks clean, dust and grime can hide in the drivetrain and linkages. A good wash and a fresh lube on your chain gives you a clean slate and help everything run smoother from day one.
2. Tune the essentials
My two biggest checks are always:
Shifting — it should feel crisp and consistent
Braking — strong, predictable, and confidence-inspiring
While you’re at it, take a look at your tires. Make sure there are no cracks, bubbles, or dry rot from sitting around during storage.
3. Think upgrades (optional, but fun)
While you’re waiting for that first ride, this is a great time to think about how the bike felt last season:
Was the saddle comfortable?
Are there new tires you’ve been curious about?
Is it time to go tubeless?
Do you need a new handlebar bag? (Yes. Always yes.)
Sometimes adding a few thoughtful accessories is all it takes to spark motivation and get excited about riding again.
4. Pick a day and commit
This might be the most important step. Put a ride on the calendar so it doesn’t get pushed off. One mile or one hundred, it doesn’t matter. Riding does something special for us, and setting aside time to get out and explore is always worth it.
Fresh bike, clear head, and a ride on the books. That’s how the season starts.
